Dr. Battino understands that without voting rights and a commitment to protecting our democracy, all other rights and policies are at stake.

Wisconsin was the first state to ratify the 19th Amendment, granting women the right to vote, and is home to great civil rights heroes. We must honor their legacy by protecting the sacred right to vote. Gillian will work closely with voting rights advocates and specialists to ensure that the right to vote is protected for every American.

Gillian supports the two major pieces of voting rights legislation currently before Congress, the For the People Act and the John R. Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act. Beyond those steps, Gillian supports granting true voting rights to the more than 700,000 residents of Washington, D.C. by making DC a state. DC Statehood would be a landmark achievement toward racial justice and toward reaching true democracy.

Dr. Battino believes we must abolish the filibuster. The filibuster started as a tool to prevent racial justice legislation from passing in the Senate, and it has been used for that purpose many times over. It’s time to put our Democracy and voting rights above an arcane rule, so that Congress gets things done for the American people.
